Harvest Time

August 23, 2022

Hawks have been flying near us lately and I take that as a good omen. hawk flying symbolizes freedom. It is a divine messenger. Seeing a hawk means you are protected. Seeing hawks all the time means you are getting a flow of ideas like a hawk does while it is flying on the wind”. (Worldbirds.com)

Hawks fly across our path. We listen to them screech and cry. They swoop down and land on trees near us. They watch us and we watch them. We feel their strength and energy.

Living on a farm allows us to interact with the land and creatures. We look for signs, watch the clouds, and predict the weather better than our apps. What this observation teaches us mostly is that we cannot control any elements outside of us. Mother Nature is in charge and we can only do our best to cope with the blessings and the curses that she seems to give us (Note: Sometimes the curses are the blessings). Farmers cannot be reactive for there are too many hurdles that are thrown down in our path on a daily basis. It requires an enduring will to go on and a peace of mind to weather the storms. We do what we can not by changing what we can’t. We work with what we have and adapt to circumstances that are often beyond our control. (Tip: It also helps to dance as often as possible).

To all wine lovers and all of our ardent supporters, it’s time to do an anti-rain dance (dance backwards), give offerings to Dionysus, don’t spill your wine, welcome the hawks flying low and bold, say a prayer, wish on a shooting star, knock on wood, throw salt over your left shoulder. Do anything and everything to sway the weather gods to make peace with us during harvest time. Our future glasses of lovely, delicious wine depends on it. There is strength in numbers, power in positive thought. If all else fails, raise a glass and say “The hell with it all”.
